My name is Poly and my wish for those of you who decide to visit our island is to love it as much as I do.

I have spent most of young life on the island and have family roots that date back to the year 1830.

I have attended primary and secondary school here and worked on the island through my young adult life until I left to pursue life in the capital. My maternal grandfather was a wind-milliner and operated one of the three historical windmills on the island throughout most of his life. This is also the spot where I now have two lovely homes for rent on the cliffs.

I grew up on the island during the 1970s and still remember the first tourists that arrived as this event was so foreign to us at that time.

In 2022, for the first time in my life, I was involved in the tourism sector while on the island of Folegandros.

Very early on during this endeavor I came to discover that I really loved what I was doing. As a result of this passion, I’ve decided, this year, in 2023, to include in our services a very important element that is missing from the tourism sector of Folegandros and that is a historical tour of our island’s past.

I studied and have a degree from the Open Hellenic University of Greece (HOL) in Greek Culture. The historical, cultural, social and ethical traditions of a place and specifically its culture is the exact object of these studies. In conjunction with my current occupation, which is within the tourism industry, I came to consider it my duty to pass on my knowledge to people who would like to know more about my island’s history and its roots.

All of my information about the island was collected with great care, from valid scientific sources. I say all, because unfortunately, there is not much information nor facts about this small island even though its history began to be recorded as early as 3000 BC.

However, it is certain that what has been recorded is particularly valuable, precious and significantly worthy enough to highlight and recount. Its perhaps buried and neglected but well worth unveiling and sharing.

In addition to the recorded historical references about this jewel of an island, there are also many memories, from the elderly people who still live on the island as well as more relevant and current information that I would like to share with you.

As a result of all of this, I created a beautiful and fascinatingly woven presentation. I diligently combined this story with a 3-hour walk through the most important and unique parts of Folegandros, so that everyone who takes part in it can understand, visualize and appreciate the island in more depth and with a richer relationship to the land itself.

It is with a deep appreciation for the island and with great pride and humbleness that I offer this to the island’s visitors.

I do hope that whatever brings you to Folegandros, that the island mesmerizes you and brings you renewed energy of body, mind and spirit.
